I am Izzy Hamilton, from Bude, North Cornwall. I learnt to windsurf in 2004 at my local lake. I enjoyed taking part in the local racing tour around the lakes in the south west, called T15 which anyone below 15 can partake. Gradually I realised that I was doing well in a lot of the races and progressed from my 1.8m sail. Today I race in the Olympic One Design class called the RS:X on an 8.5m sail.

I am a member of the Olympic Performance team which allows me to compete and train around the world. Windsurfing races are about half an hour long and we have three races a day over a five or six day competition. Some days I burn the equivalent number of calories to a marathon runner! To go at maximum speed you have to pump the sail which requires maximum effort. The RS:X is a hybrid class with elements of formula and traditional race board windsurfing. The board is wide so it can plane upwind in the strong wind and it also has a board in the middle to allow sailing upwind in light winds. This allows us to race in anything from 4 - 30 knots reaching speeds over 20mph!

Highlights of my youth career included finishing first at two world championships. I finished 9th in the 2015 World Championships held in Santander and am currently ranked 5th in the ISAF World Rankings.

Day to day I train in the national performance centre which is based on Portland in Dorset. I spend two or three hours in the gym each day before hitting the water for a sailing session in the afternoon. A lot of my time training is spent abroad, it is too cold in the winter to spend a long amount of time sailing so we normally move house to a place in Europe, this past winter I trained in Cagliari in Italy which was beautiful. Other aspects of training are specific to a venue holding a tour event. I spent a month training in Miami for the North American Regatta, also Palma in Spain, Hyere in France, Weymouth in the UK, Mondello in Sicily and Muscat in Oman. I am fortunate to also spend several training camps at the 2016 Olympic venue in Rio de Janeiro, training in the exact waters the Olympic Event will take place next summer.

My favourite place I have been windsurfing is either a World Championships that was held in Buzios in Brazil, it was a beautiful location with fantastic wind conditions and big waves! The windsurfing beach is located on one side of a peninsula and the surfing beach on the other and it is a 10 minute walk between the two! Windsurfing and surfing with turtles swimming around you is an incredible experience. Another amazing place was Cozumel, a Mexican island which I went to for a training camp. Crystal clear water and beautiful Caribbean beaches was incredible.

When I am not training I enjoy taking part in a variety of different sports. Weymouth is perfect for kitesurfing and I love trying to do big jumps and learn new tricks although I am not very good! I grew up in North Cornwall and I spend as much down time there as I can surfing and SUP boarding at my local beaches. As windsurfing requires so my dedicated fitness training I have to spend a lot of time doing cardio training. Although a lot of this has to be spend of specialised equipment in the teams performance gym I try and do as much outdoors as possible on my road and mountain bike.

I am super lucky to be supported by the British Sailing Team, their sponsors and UK Sport with funding from the National Lottery. I work hard to build relationships with personal financial sponsors! So much windsurfing and traveling do not allow time for a proper job and most of the finances have to be sourced independently! I am currently supported by Voyager Coffee Roasters and South West Water, their support is crucial to allowing me to be able to compete at the level I do! Products from Ovio wellness, PWR+, Toolstream, FUELyour10k and Spezia organics in addition to BOING now! All great companies who's support is invaluable!
